This website offers absolutely stunning free Wordpress templates. This is the designer's own website, not a collection of submitted templates so it is a small collection, but man, they are extremely high quality.

Free Wordpress Theme

I have recently started to use Wordpress for quite a number of my own sites. Wordpress themes are actually quite fun to design - one almost feels that you can do what you like and not have to stick with strictly 'stiff-upper-lip-corporate' designs such as for Joomla, for example.

So I designed a quick Wordpress template yesterday, making use of the free vector art available on http://www.bittbox.com/ (check out the site - lots of free vector art available as well as utilities such as paintbrushes for Photoshop etc - great stuff).

I am making the template available for free download here - click on the thumbnail screenshot below.

Wordpress Themes Update

The Wordpress Theme Viewer is available again for theme downloads, however, today it was down for a couple of hours....

This drove me to look elsewhere for themes again and I came across the following three sites:

Rock-Kitty - Free Wordpress Themes: This site is only three months old but already has over 300 themes. Nice thumbnail previews. Not all the themes have live demos but seeing that you can look at the thumbnail it gives you a pretty good indication of the theme already.

Another Wordpress theme viewer : No thumbnails, but live previews. Nice 'Web 2.0' style templates, most of them widget ready

Another collection of Wordpress Themes : Also no thumbnails, just a live demo function.

I am busy setting up a site for which I need a Wordpress template with a column on the left. No problemo. Just go to the Wordpress Themes site and look for one.

Oh dear. Wordpress themes seem to be no more. I found some references on a site where it seems as if the maintenance and spam problems related to the theme viewer just became too much. This is a pity, since whatever the problems, it still provided a nice way of viewing and searching for themes in one place. Now you have to look all over the place.

Just for reference purposes, here are a couple more sites with nice Wordpress themes:

Firstly, this guy (Small Potatoes!) is no small potatoes when it comes to designing Wordpress themes. Check out his site for his challenge to design one Wordpress theme a day. Means lots of nice Wordpress Themes for us!

Then there is a theme browser with previews:

And this site offers some basic, SEO ready Wordpress templates that are ready for customisation. Also check out the handy customisation guide on their site.

This guy has some really nice, straight-forward, simple (but stylish) Wordpress Themes:

And this site actually did have lots of left column Wordpress themes after all! http://www.gfxedit.com/category/themes/wordpress

And check out this site! Relatively new, but VERRRY nice templates. Quite a few with the column on the left as well.

Wordpress for building sites

Wordpress is primarily a blogging tool. It is FREE and you can either download it from the Wordpress site (www.wordpress.org) or from the Fantastico Panel that comes bundled with our CPanel hosting.

Even though it is a blogging tool, with the latest release they have added the functionality to have 'static pages', which are just like normal html pages and it has expanded the scope of what can be done with Wordpress tremendously.

On the Wordpress site is also a support forum and the documentation is also quite extensive.

Like Mambo, there are also enough templates available to keep you busy for hours and hours (this one.. no.. this one!). A particularly good sites for templates is:
http://www.alexking.org/software/wordpress/theme_browser.php. New templates also get added on almost a daily basis and their look and feel are quite varied.

The one thing about Wordpress that you have to keep in mind though is that the template layouts are pretty tied into the template itself. It is more difficult to add little modules and sections than with Mambo.
