This is a screenprint of a typical edit window on the back end. Please note that in this case the JCE editor has been loaded. There are numerous editors available for Joomla, some free and some commercial. Each of these will have a slightly different interface. In terms of free editors, I prefer the JCE editor since it has some nifty features that make it easy to do things such as inserting images, linking to other pages etc.

Here is a closer look at the WYWIWYG editor control panel buttons and what they mean. I am not covering ALL the buttons, since some of them are used so seldom that it is not worth giving attention to them - the following buttons are the ones that you will use most often:

undoredo Undo and Redo
bolditalicUppercase Bold, Italics, Underline
bullets numbersitalic

Bullets, numbers

html

HTML - View the HTML Source. This is particularly useful if your content on the front end does not look the same as in your backend editor. The problem is normally that your backend editor does not show the following:

<p> </p> This is a paragraph with a space in. If you are getting unexplained gaps between your paragraphs on the front end, these are normally the culprit. You can delete these with no particular harm, as long as you delete the full <p>.... up to the </p>

Cut and Paste

Cut and Paste (Self explanatory)

Paste from word

Paste from Word - USE THIS!

Paste as Plain Text - ALSO USE THIS!

These two buttons will strip out any strange characters and nasty formatting

table

up to end of table formatting buttons

Table formatting. Use only if you can work with tables, like in MSWord. Useful for spacing text and pictures EXACTLY.

link unlink

Link and unlink. Use these to insert links to other pages or to other websites.

If you are using the advanced linking plugin with the JCE editor, it allows you to link easily to other internal pages in Joomla. You can select a section, category and/or item to link to. You need to highlight the link text first before the link buttons become active

File Manager

File manager icon. This is a specific plugin for the JCE Editor that is extremely useful. It allows one to upload files such as PDF, Word documents etc to your Joomla website, and then link to them so that people can download these files again.

image

Image manager icon. This is to upload images directly into your content. Please see below for the image manager screen.
