So you have wanted to upgrade your joomla 1.0 site to joomla
1.5 but scared to make the jump in case you lose your current content? Well you
no longer need to worry about that any more as in this tutorial we can show you
how to migrate your Joomla 1.0 content to Joomla 1.5.
Click on the read more link below to get to the meat of the matter.
First things first, you need to make a backup of your
current joomla 1.0 site. This is VERY important!!! Making a backup will save
you just in case something goes wrong in the migrating process. (Although
having a backup of the site no matter what is always a good habit to get into)
Note: We are only
upgrading the content i.e. the information stored in the database. Components,
modules, plugins and templates you had on the previous Joomla 1.0 site will be
lost when moving to Joomla 1.5.
Step 1: installing
the migratory component.
The first step we need to take is installing the migrator
component to your current joomla 1.0 site. This component will allow us to
extract our content and install it on our newer joomla 1.5 site.
To download the migratory component go to:
http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/pasamioprojects/frs/?action=FrsReleaseBrowse&frs_package_id=2588
Once the migratory component has been installed, go to your
components menu in the Joomla 1.0 backend and select Migrator.
As said above, the migrator component will allow you to
extract the data from your Joomla 1.0 site to the newer Joomla 1.5 database
format.
Step 2: Creating
the migration SQL File
To start the migration process, select the Create Migration
SQL File button which will be at the bottom of the Migrator component page.
Select it.
After you have created the Migration SQL file, you need to
download it from your Joomla 1.0 site. You can start downloading the SQL file
by selecting the download link on the right hand section of the page.
Step 3: Make a
clean Joomla 1.5 installation
Start the joomla 1.5 installation, once the installation
screen has opened, select the language and create the database and user.
Proceed with the installation till you get to step 6: Configuration.
Fill in all the information like your site name and admin email etc. Look out
for the Load Migration Script option
and select it.
In the old table prefix entry, type in _jos (if that was your old table prefix, else use the correct
prefix that was used in your original Joomla 1.0 installation) and leave the
encoding section as is. To select your SQL migration file (the SQL file we
created earlier in step 2) select browse and locate your SQL file. Make sure
the "This script is a joomla 1.0 migration
script" checkbox is selected.
Now select the Upload
and Execute button to begin the transfer.
When the data has been successfully migrated you should see
a message telling you the migration was successful. Then click on next to carry out the rest of your
joomla installation. Don't forget to remove the install directory completely
once you have completed the installation of your Joomla 1.5 site.
Now if you open up the front end of your site, all your
content from your Joomla 1.0 site should now be present on your Joomla 1.5
site. Now "all" that you have to do if you want to get your Joomla
1.5 up to the same level of functionality as your Joomla 1.0 site is to
reinstall your components, set up your menus and configure your parameters -
good luck!
