osCommerce - Pricetag payment module
Written by Christine
Thursday, 07 July 2005
Of course you know that osCommerce is an extremely powerful and popular shopping cart and probably the best thing about it is its price - FREE (I always like those!)

osCommerce comes with several payment modules - Paypal, 2Checkout and a whole host of others. But of course if you live in a country that is not supported by Paypal this doesn't help you much, now does it?

I have therefore written a payment module for osCommerce into one of the popular South African payment merchants - Pricetag. You are welcome to download the module, with installation instructions included, and use in your osCommerce installation. I am providing it free of charge under the GPL licence.

Click here to download the osCommerce Pricetag payment module.

PHP and MySQL

PHP is a free script that is offered with most Linux hosting services and is the de facto standard for writing dynamic websites. In combination with the other de facto standard for storing data, namely the MySql datbase, you can quickly and easily expand the functionality of your website by making use of the literally thousands of free tools and utilities that can be downloaded from places like Hotscripts.

In addition to that, there are already between 25 and 40 free scripts and tools immediately available to you under the Fantastico control panel.

You can have as many MySql databases that you need without paying extra - a lot of these tools each use their own MySql database and with our hosting package you can set up as many scripts as you need!

Full Web Statistics (Awstats, Webalizer and more) are available. Here is a screenshot of one of the popular web statistic software included in our web hosting packages.

By using this package you can see:

  • How many visitors you have received
  • How long they stayed
  • Which pages are visited the most
  • What types of browsers they use to view your site
  • Through which search engine(s) was your site found
  • What keywords they used to find your site
  • Which, and how often, search engine spiders visit your site
  • And more…

All this information can be used to tailor your site to fulfill more of your visitors’ expectations.

Email benefits

You can have as many email accounts that you need based on your requirements and the web space available - you might have to pay a additional R15-00 per month for each email account above the standard ones available with your hosting package.

All email accounts are branded with the company domain name (e.g. sales@companyname.co.za ).

Free Webmail software enables your email to be kept centrally on the web server and accessed from any location - so if you travel around a lot for your business this means that you can access your email from anywhere in the world. MSOutlook access on local workstations at the same time is also possible.

As many auto-responders that you need. An auto-responder is set up to send automated responses to requests sent to a pre-setup email address. It offers a response to customers’ requests without human intervention. Please note that these standard auto-responders work off a specific email address, for example, you can have an email address like 'catalogue@yoursite.co.za'  which can automatically send your company catalogue to anyone who sends an email to this address. More sophisticated autoresponders are available on the internet. Prices range from free to expensive, depending on what you want to do and how much effort you are prepared to put in yourself.

Mailing lists – mailing lists are probably one of the most valuable tools of any business. When a customer sends an enquiry for pricing information through the website, he can be asked at the same time whether he would like to receive occasional emails regarding promotional material, special offers, company announcements etc. His name is then added to a mailing list that can then be used to keep in contact with these site visitors. This can help to turn once-off visitors into long-term customers. A standard Mailing list utility is available as part of the control panel, but you can also install PHPList from the Fantastico control panel - it looks very sophisticated yet easy to use.

ALEXA WEIGHS IN...

For those who are unaware of Alexa, it offers an interesting toolto webmasters. The service is designed to value websites based on the number of people who visit those sites and the activities of those people while they are on a site.

Keep in mind that their results are skewed to the activities of those who use the Alexa toolbar. If your website is Business-to-Business oriented, then the results may be useful to your needs. If your site is Business-to-Customer oriented, then the Alexa results are far from accurate in documenting the importance of your website.

The reason why the Alexa results are skewed to the Business-to-Business market is because most people using the Alexa toolbar are involved in Business-to-Business activities, either as an user or provider of B2B services.

On May 24, 2005, Alexa's ranking of the Top Ten English Language websites were as follows:

( This info came from: http://www.alexa.com/site/ds/top_500 )

WHAT EIGHT OF THE TOP TEN WEBSITES ALL HAVE IN COMMON

Sure, five of these top ten sites are search oriented sites, but that is not the answer.

Passport.net is owned by Microsoft and must be accessed when someone is logging into the msn.com network. Fastclick.com is a site that helps advertisers buy advertising across a huge network of sites. These two sites do not fit the profile.

The one thing that eight of our top ten sites have in common is that they are content driven destinations and they add new, original, and exclusive content on a daily basis.

BLOGS ARE THE GREAT EQUALIZER

Blogs are the great equalizer because they simplify the task of adding content to a website on a daily or weekly basis. They make it simple for the average joe to add content to their site on a daily basis with just a few clicks of the mouse.

What is more, the spider search engine companies recognize this and make it a point to spider the blog networks on a regular basis, sometimes a daily basis.

It may take a spider search engine up to three months to spider your site if you go directly to their submission page to add your domain to their database. On the other hand, with a blog, you can put a story about your domain on a blog with a link to your domain, and your website can generally get crawled within a week or so of putting your link on the blog.

BLOGS REQUIRE A COMMITMENT ON YOUR PART

Daily additions to your blog should be your goal. If you do not have time to do daily additions, you should at worst do a weekly addition to your blog.

Just like in the real world of websites, if you don't update your blog on a regular basis, the spiders will save their time and resources by not spidering your blog on a daily basis. If however you do update on a daily or near daily basis, then the spiders will visit your blog with the same fervor you bring to your blog.

Additionally, it sometimes seems like the search engine spiders are giving some addition weight to the results culled from the blogs. The point in this additional weighting is that blogs are filled with personal comments and recommendations rather than sales pitches.

BLOGS ARE EASY TO SET UP, EVEN FOR THE RANK AMATEUR

There are in fact several blog programs available that you can either load into your own domain or that you can use from a third-party, remotely-hosted server.

To see a list of the blogging programs that are available, check out this link:

My personal favorite is http://www.blogger.com which happens to be owned by Google. Blogger allows you the ability to use the software from their servers or to integrate the blog software into your own site with very little effort on your part.

I was able to integrate their software into our own site and to customize the display of the blogger to fit our domain's format, and I was able to pull that task off in just about 30 minutes --- with most of that time dedicated to the custom display of our blog.

Add to the simplicity of setting up the blog, the fact that since blogger.com is owned by Google.com, they will always be very keen to spider our blog on a regular basis.

From launch of our website, to the spidering of our site by Google took just about ten days. Within three days of the launch of our site, Google had spidered the main page of our site. Within ten days, Google had already spidered the whole of our website.

Compared to other websites we have launched, this was the fastest turn-around time from new release to traffic from the search engines. We believe the difference in this case study had to do more with the addition of the blog on the day of our launch than anything else we may have done to promote our domain.

EQUALIZE YOUR SITE WITH THE SITES OF THE BIG BOYS

The big sites on the internet got to be that way because they consistently add new, original, and exclusive content to their websites.

While you and I may never have as much content on our sites as the big boys do, we can benefit from the lessons they teach to us.

Now that you have also learned this important lesson, it is time to put this knowledge into action. Make it part of your daily or weekly schedule to add fresh, interesting content to your website. Your banker will thank you.

Syndicating a Mambo Blog
Saturday, 18 June 2005
The final step in setting up Mambo as a blog is to syndicate your blog's content. Syndication through an RSS feed is an easy way to make  your content publishable on a lot of websites. It is a win-win scenario, since the site that publishes your feed gets regular fresh content. This means that they can offer fresh content to visitors, and search engne spiders also love new content, which means that their sites will get spidered more often!

If you syndicate your content it means that you win since your content is now visible to more eyes and you will get more visitors to your site.

Mambo does offer site syndication as a built in functionality, however, only for the items on the front page. This is not really what I wanted. I did some scratching around on two of the big Mambo forums (www.mambers.com and forum.mamboserver.com) and found some other people looking for the same thing.  There were no easy solutions however and in the end I had to make some code modifications.

This is what I did to get a RSS feed of my Mambo blog...

Mambo Commenting systems
Monday, 13 June 2005
A commenting system is essential when you start a blog. This provides a mechanism for people to interact with your content. Mambo does not have comments built in, but there are various options for getting someone to comment on your content.

The two Mambo components that I have evaluated are MosComment and AkoComments.

More about our hosting
Written by Christine
Monday, 13 June 2005
We offer low cost web hosting services for the internet home based business owner and the small business owner.

It may surprise you to learn that we do not consider Web Hosting to be our primary business. We would much rather focus on the design and marketing of your site. That is why we outsource the physical hosting infrastructure to someone else. In this case, we are resellers for a  reputable hosting company located in Chicago. This company has been offering hosting services since 1999 and became an incorporated company in 2001. The company currently serves 6000+ clients, hosting over 45000+ websites directly through retail/reseller sales, providing over 300 Virtual and Dedicated servers.
Their computers are Pentium III, or Pentium IV, class machines running the latest version of Apache web server software over the latest release of the Red Hat Linux operating system. Apache responds to web page fetch requests from remote browsers while Linux is one of several variants of the Unix operating system.
