Learn the basics of website development and get a good grounding in HTML and CSS

What is HTML?

HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language and it is the universal language that is used to build websites. Each and every website that you see on the Internet is built ultimately using HTML.

Yes, some websites are dynamic in nature and is generated by means of some scripting language such as PHP or ASP, but ultimately the pages that you see in your browser ends up being HTML pages.

Why learn HTML?

Even if you make use of a Content Management System such as Joomla or Wordpress, you need to know the basics of HTML to take you just that step further. You will have more control over the layout of your pages and will be able to manage your content in a sophisticated way - if your layout is broken, you will know why and will be able to fix it easily yourself. If you use a WYSIWYG editor such as Dreamweaver you also need to know HTML even if these tools tend to hide a lot of the detail HTML from you. If you want to provide web design services in any shape of form, or if you want to build your own website, a good knowledge of the workings of HTML (XHTML) is absolutely necessary.

What is CSS?

CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheet and it is the method by which you can manage and control the layout and design of your website pages. The magic of CSS is that you can take exactly the same website page and make it look completely different by just applying a different stylesheet to it.

HTML and CSS work together to give you full control over the design of your website.
